Resources for setting up your own business

These books are mostly about marketing and sales - the skill area that most people setting up a business need to develop.

Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even If You Hate Marketing and Selling - Michael Port

Very good and very readable. Starts with focussing you on your ideal clients and market and leads to practical strategies for getting clients to come to you.

There are a lot of books and ebooks around that cover this ground but this one is comprehensive, inspiring and easy to read.

Recommended.
Get Clients Now!: A 28-Day Marketing Program for Professionals, Consultants, and Coaches - C J Hayden

A great programme for people who are stuck with their marketing. Helps you to focus your activity, set yourself actions and create momentum. Highly recommended.

She has a website here: www.GetClientsNow.com
 E-myth Revisited - Michael E. Gerber

Looks at why many small businesses fail and then helps you to change your role from technical (eg coach) to manager and entrepreneur.

Easy to read style helps to change your perspective on your business.

Useful for people considering moving into self employment.

NB this book is quite old - the e-myth was first published in 1986.
Getting Business to Come to You - Paul and Sarah Edwards and Laura Clampitt Douglas

A big fat book packed full of ideas for marketing small businesses.  It is more than ten years old, so doesn't include detailed advice on search engine optimisation (SEO) or web marketing. However it is very readable and full of good ideas.

NB it is American.

Setting up a consulting practice

Alan Weiss - all three books are good. They look at practical and philosphical issues in running a practice such as how to price your services and how to market yourself.

There is substantial overlap between them, so go for the one which best suits where you are in setting up your practice.

NB they are American so you will need to translate some of legal and financial advice.
Getting Started in Consulting - Alan Weiss

This one is good if you are setting up in consulting from scratch.
Million Dollar Consulting - Alan Weiss

This one is about building your practice - good if you have some experience of consulting, but also good for beginners if you have thought through how you will work.
The Ultimate Consultant - Alan Weiss

Aimed at already successful consultants - takes you to the next level
